Adventure games

Adventure games are where the writing carries the weight. They are about places, people and the slow accumulation of understanding — you explore, you talk, you piece something together, and the mechanics exist to serve that rather than to test you.

Point-and-click, narrative and interactive fiction

Classic point-and-click adventures give you an inventory and a set of rooms and ask you to work out which object or conversation unlocks the next step. Narrative games strip out most of the puzzle-solving to focus on choice and consequence. Interactive fiction goes further, replacing images with prose and letting your imagination do the rendering — a form that has never really gone away.

Why independent developers gravitate here

An adventure game can be extraordinary on the strength of one writer's voice. It does not need physics, netcode or a large art pipeline, which means a solo developer with something to say can compete with anyone. Some of the most affecting games on this platform are in this category and were made by one person over a few months.

Length and platforms

Adventure games tend to run longer than other categories here — anywhere from twenty minutes to several hours — so most save automatically, and the individual pages say so where it matters. They suit any device with a screen and a way to point at it, and you will find them across PC, console, tablet, phone and the browser.

Each listing states the platforms, an approximate playtime written by the developer, and where to get the game.
