Survival

Survival games start by taking things away. You arrive with nothing, the environment is indifferent or hostile, and the first hour is spent solving problems — warmth, water, food, shelter — that most games never bother to pose. The genre's appeal is the arc out of that: the point where the things that nearly killed you on day one have become routine.

What the genre actually asks of you

Most survival games run on a small number of interacting pressures. Hunger and thirst set a clock. Temperature and weather make the map uneven, with some places simply not survivable yet. Durability and scarcity mean equipment is temporary. Crafting turns raw material into capability, and the tech tree is really a map of which parts of the world you are allowed into next.

From that base the genre splits. Open-world survival games give you a large persistent map and no particular goal beyond continuing. Survival crafting games foreground building, and often become base-design games once the early pressure eases. Roguelike survival compresses the whole arc into a single run. Multiplayer survival adds other players, which in practice means adding the most unpredictable hazard in the game.

Where survival games live

These games tend to be systems-heavy and long, which shapes where they run well. A large simulated world with persistent state asks more of hardware than most genres, so the ambitious ones cluster on PC and console. But the pattern scales down cleanly: mobile survival games work by shrinking the map and shortening the loop, and there are browser-based survival roguelikes built around twenty-minute runs. VR survival games make the manual tasks — lighting a fire, drawing a bow — physical, which changes the pacing considerably.

Each listing here states the platforms it supports, whether it has multiplayer, and where to buy or play it.

Surviving the first hour

The most common mistake is exploring before securing a base. Survival games are almost always more forgiving once you have a fixed point to return to with stored supplies, and almost always brutal while you are carrying everything you own. Establish somewhere dull and safe first; the interesting parts of the map will still be there.
